Students at Solidarity’s Catholic Health Training Institute (CHTI) in Wau are being well prepared for a future in health care. “Evaluations from employers offer high praise for these graduates who are committed and competent, and thus, highly sought after as health care professionals,” said Sister Joan Mumaw, IHM, executive director of Friends in Solidarity.
Forty percent of students at CHTI are women, compared to 20 percent in 2010. A new women’s dorm is under construction, which will accommodate more female students.
According to Sister Joan, nearly 85 percent of CHTI graduates find employment within South Sudan, either in church-run hospitals and clinics or with non-governmental organizations.
South Sudan has the highest maternal rate of death in the world and high rates of child mortality under the age of 5. Sister Joan said she is grateful for the support of donors who are making it possible for the young people of South Sudan to build a future for themselves while meeting a critical need in their communities.
