Friends in Solidarity (FiS) is a U.S.-based Catholic nonprofit responding to one of the world’s most urgent crises. South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, has endured decades of conflict, claiming over 400,000 lives and displacing millions. A war-weakened economy, climate-driven instability, and widespread poverty have left communities without reliable access to healthcare, education, or sustainable livelihood. Yet, even in the face of hardship, the South Sudanese people continue to strive toward a future of peace and stability.
FiS serves as the U.S. partner of Solidarity with South Sudan (SwSS), an initiative founded at the request of the Catholic Conference of Sudan bishops and supported by the Union of Superiors General and the International Union of Superiors General. This international network of Catholic religious congregations—comprising sisters, brothers, priests, and lay professionals— equips South Sudanese people with the skills to rebuild their own nation. Specialized on-ground projects operate across multiple regional sites, training teachers, nurses, midwives, farmers, and pastoral leaders while also reaching remote communities in need.
